Bem Brasil #54: Four albums + Three Decades + Two Hours = One Great Show!

On This Sunday's Bem Brasil Radio, your host will try to outdo himself and break his previous record of three albums in two hours by cramming four full albums in his two-hour time slot! Our cup runneth over!

This week's selections represent some of the cream of Brazilian music with four amazing albums that span three decades. Four (actually, eight) different artists, with four of them hailing  from the great state of Bahia. Coincidence? Don't bet on it!

Click Here To Hear This Show!

Our musical romp begins with the album Polemica,From 1956. Originally released as two four-track 8-inch records, it was rearranged and combined into a single LP when the technology finally caught up. These recordings were the product of a friendly three-year long musical competition between the seminal samba songwriter Noel Rosa and the then unknown rising star Wilson Batista. like other musical rivalries in history, this one forced each man to take his craft to new heights. Francisco Egydio sings Rosa's songs, while Batista's songs are interpreted by Roberto Paiva.

Track List/Author:

1- Lenço No Pescoco (Wilson Batista)
2- Rapaz Folgado (Noel Rosa)
3 -Mocinho De Vila (Wilson Batista)
4 -Palpite Infeliz (Noel Rosa)
5 -Frankenstein Da Vila (Wilson Batista)
6 -Feitiço Da Vila (Noel Rosa)
7 -Conversa Fiada (Wilson Batista)
8 -João Ninguém (Noel Rosa)
9 -Terra De Cego (Wilson Batista)

From Samba, we will move to Bossa Nova for our second selection, which will be no other than Joao Gilberto's debut album Chega de Saudade from 1959! Often credited as the first Bossa Nova Album, it is considered one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history by Rolling Stone Magazine!

Track List:

1 - Chega de Saudade

2 - Lobo Bobo
3 - Brigas Nunca Mais
4 - Ho-Ba-La-La
5 - Saudade Fez um Samba

7 - Desafinado
8 - Rosa Morena
9 - Morena boca de Ouro
10 - Bim Bom
11 - Aos Pes Da Cruz
12 - E Luxo So

For our third selection, we will stay with the good folk from Bahia to hear another auspicious debut, this time from Maria Bethania whose first album could be considered a synthesis of the two albums above.. Released in 1965, in this album we hear some of her brother Caetano Veloso's earliest compositions, as well as songs from Noel Rosa, Carlos Lyra and Dorival Caymmi, (the latter two having songs covered by Gilberto).

Track List:
1 - De Manhã
2 - Só Eu Sei
3 - Pombo Correio
4 - No Carnaval

Finally, we close the show with seminal rocker Raul Seixas' second album Sociedade da Grã-Ordem Kavernista Apresenta Sessão das 10. (1971)  an avant-garde album featuring Seixas, singer Sergio Sampaio, samba artist Miriam Batucada and Edy Star. The record's mix of Tropicalia, Zappa-era rock and roll and anarchic surrealistic experiments launched Raul Seixas as an icon of Brazilian counterculture.

YouTube Pick of the Week #8: Romero Lubambo Clinic 2011

This week's pick is a clinic held by the great Brazilian Guitarist Romero Lubambo. In it, Romero discusses his musical concept, the influence of Street Samba, and how it, through the influence of classical music and jazz harmonies, made its way into affluent Brazilian homes via the classical guitar. He illustrates his point with heartstopping renditions of Influencia do jazz, Wave  and Baden Powell's Samba Triste. Later on, He explains and plays a Baiao original. The show ends with a great duet with Julian Lage.

To hear Romero playing electric guitar with a full band (and playing a blistering solo, by the way), check our YouTube Pick of the Week #3: Tom Jobim and Astrud Gilberto - Viva Brasil

Check this space for updates about our next show, airing this coming Sunday!

YouTube Pick of the Week #7: Jovino Santos Neto - The Rhythmic Language of Brazilian Music

This week's pick may be of particular interest to musicians, but I think that non-musicians will find it equally compelling: It is a 90-minute lecture by Jovino Santos Neto, who played piano and flute with Hermeto Pascoal for almost 30 years.

The lecture takes place in Boston's Berklee College of Music in 2007 and, with sidemen Oscar Stagnaro on Bass and Mark Walker on Drums, Jovino takes his audience in a trip around Brazil, talking about the common thread between Bossa Nova and Samba, as well as other regional rhythms, such as Forro, Xaxado, Coco, Arrasta-Pe and their origins as part of the middle eastern diaspora, brought to Brazil during the colonial times.  He Also talks about his experiences working with Hermeto, and the significance of the Quarteto Novo, The seminal Brazilian group which included Airto Moreira, Heraldo do Monte and Theo de Barros.

Jovino's voice is a little low throughout, but the instrumental sections sound great. It might be a good idea to use headphones for this one.

To hear  Choice tracks from Quarteto Novo, check out Show #6. Show link: http://www.fccfreeradio.com/archive/bem%20brasil/brasil_previous_2012-08-19_15-58-04.mp3

YouTube Pick of the Week #4: Na Levada do Choro - Full Documentary (English Subtitles)

When people think of Brazilian Music, they tend to think of either Bossa Nova or Samba. Rarely do they think of a musical genre which not only combines the harmonic sophistication of the former with the rhythmic sophistication of the latter, but could also be considered their predecessor and originator: Choro.

To my mind, Brazilian Choro can be compared in many ways to Dixieland, but played primarily with string instruments (although brass and woodwinds are also used). The mood of the music is, for the most part, lively and relies heavily on modulations, intertwining voices and instrumental virtuosity.

Although it originated in the 19th Century, Choro is still very much alive an in vogue. This documentary features interviews with many old veterans, as well as new voices who are keeping the music alive. (Note, the subtitles don't seem to appear when this program is watched on an iPad. They do appear on a desktop computer)>

Thank for reading my posts. Check back often. Our featured artist of the week will be posted Friday or Saturday.
