YouTube Pick of the Week #7: Jovino Santos Neto - The Rhythmic Language of Brazilian Music

This week's pick may be of particular interest to musicians, but I think that non-musicians will find it equally compelling: It is a 90-minute lecture by Jovino Santos Neto, who played piano and flute with Hermeto Pascoal for almost 30 years.

The lecture takes place in Boston's Berklee College of Music in 2007 and, with sidemen Oscar Stagnaro on Bass and Mark Walker on Drums, Jovino takes his audience in a trip around Brazil, talking about the common thread between Bossa Nova and Samba, as well as other regional rhythms, such as Forro, Xaxado, Coco, Arrasta-Pe and their origins as part of the middle eastern diaspora, brought to Brazil during the colonial times.  He Also talks about his experiences working with Hermeto, and the significance of the Quarteto Novo, The seminal Brazilian group which included Airto Moreira, Heraldo do Monte and Theo de Barros.

Jovino's voice is a little low throughout, but the instrumental sections sound great. It might be a good idea to use headphones for this one.

To hear  Choice tracks from Quarteto Novo, check out Show #6. Show link: http://www.fccfreeradio.com/archive/bem%20brasil/brasil_previous_2012-08-19_15-58-04.mp3

Bem Brasil #50: Three Albums in Two Hours! (Airs 06/23!)

Wow, 50 shows already? The weeks just flew by! As the show's producer and presenter, I have to say I have enjoyed every minute so far. Unfortunately, this feeling is somewhat diminished by the knowledge that some show files were lost. So, to celebrate this somewhat auspicious occasion (to me, anyway), I've decided to replay three great but very different albums that were featured in earlier shows that were lost, starting with show #17, which featured Di Melo' s one and only album, released in 1975 (Rare and out of print!), which included cameos from Hermeto Pascoal and Heraldo do Monte

Song List:

1- Kiilario
2- A Vida Em Seus Metodos Diz Calma
3-  Aceito Tudo
4 - Conformopolis
5 - Ma-lida
6- Sementes
7- Pernalonga
8- Minha Estrela
9- Se O Mundo Acabasse Em Mel
10- Alma Gemea
11- Joao
12- Indecisao

Originally aired on our 22nd show, our second selection will be an encore presentation of Caetano Veloso's 1968 album. One of the first Tropicália efforts, this album is one of the earliest experiments in fusion between  Brazilian popular music and psychedelic rock.

Song List:

1-Tropicalia
2- Clarice
3-No Dia Em Que Eu Vim-Me Embora
4- Alegria, Alegria
5- Onde Andaras
6-Anunciacao
7-Superbacan
8- Paisagem Util
9-Clara (With Gal Costa)
10- Soy Loco Por Ti, America
11- Ave Maria
12- Eles

Finally, we will once again play our featured album from show#25, which was the last show of 2012. Being the last show of the year, this selection was picked with some care. It is none other than the second album by the Brazilian musical group Novos BaianosAcabou Chorare., released in 1972. Adopting the expressive guitar of Jimi Hendrix, the "brasilidade" of Assis Valente, and the strong influence of João Gilberto, who also served as a mentor of the group at the time of recording the album, the group produced an album that shows a great versatility of musical genres. In 2007, in the "The 100 Greatest Albums of Brazilian Music" by Rolling StoneAcabou Chorare came at the first position, being considered a masterpiece by specialists, producers and journalists called for the pool.Whether you tune in live or download our podcast (heck, why not do both?), this is a show you will not want to miss!

YouTube Pick of the Week #6: Nordeste Já! (Chega de Mágoa) - 1985

This week's pick is a bit of a paradox: It contains the highest number of artists ever, and yet it is the shortest  video picked to date.

1985 was the year We Are the World came out, and it was a big hit in Brazil. Somebody liked the concept and decided to reproduce it and apply it to the victims of the drought in the northeastern part of Brazil, an area that has long been known for this situation. In fact, it is the theme of the region's most representative song, Asa Branca written by illustrious native son Luiz Gonzaga, who fittingly also participates in the video featured here.

According to Raimundo Fagner's website (http://www.raimundofagner.com.br), Gilberto Gil wrote the music and the lyric was a collaboration between Gil and a few other artists. In the spirit of the occasion, the song was credited as a collective creation. Most artists contributions are vocal, with the exception of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Wagner Tiso, who contributed by playing piano. While the individual singers'' performances were praised, some critics derided the chorus sections, which were not as well arranged as they would have liked. Still, this 155 person recording (full chorus listed below) contains what must be a record number of major Brazilian Artists and is unlikely to ever be beaten.

This week's video was recorded to publicize the album and shows some artists recording the tracks. How many can you identify?

Wikipedia links below, when active, lead to the artists' Portuguese language entries. Click on the English link for English version, when available. Note: Some artists listed do not have wikipedia pages.
