Uh-oh, another Gilberto Gil special! This time, with good reason, though: The man himself came to town, so we had to do the right thing and give him due coverage. Also, I hoped the timeliness of the show would help us pick up some SFJazz listeners.
In any case, this edition Bem Brasil with Will Crawford, we once again enjoyed the many talents of one of the founders of the famous tropicália movement in Brazil. Gil and fellow Bahians Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa radically reinvented Brazilian popular music in the mid-60s by combining Beatlesque psychedelia, art rock and Brazil’s northeastern roots rhythms.
On the first hour, we focused on our usual selection of unusual selections, featuring groovy sounds from Sergio Mendes, Cássia Eller, Kid Abelha, Os Cariocas, Milton Nascimento and many others.
Errata: I misspoke on the radio. The Paramount Theater (pictured above on the day of the event) is located in Oakland, not San Francisco. Oops...
