Bem Brasil #69 Featuring Os Borges Airs Today in Studio 1A!

Today's Bem Brasil Radio is all about family. specifically, the family of Lô Borges, who is best known for his collaboration with Milton Nascimento, which led to the highly influential Clube da Esquina album released in 1972. 

Today's selection was released in 1980 and features the entire Borges clan, a musical family from the state of Minas Gerais, consisting of the brothers Nico Borges, Telo Borges, Marilton Borges, Márcio Borges, Yê Borges, Lô Borges and Solange Borges, the father and mother Salomao Borges 

and Dona Maricota Borges. Making appearances on this disc are  Toninho Horta, Elis Regina, Gonzaguinha, Lucio Alves and  Milton Nascimento himself.

Bem Brasil #50: Three Albums in Two Hours! (Airs 06/23!)

Wow, 50 shows already? The weeks just flew by! As the show's producer and presenter, I have to say I have enjoyed every minute so far. Unfortunately, this feeling is somewhat diminished by the knowledge that some show files were lost. So, to celebrate this somewhat auspicious occasion (to me, anyway), I've decided to replay three great but very different albums that were featured in earlier shows that were lost, starting with show #17, which featured Di Melo' s one and only album, released in 1975 (Rare and out of print!), which included cameos from Hermeto Pascoal and Heraldo do Monte.

Originally aired on our 22nd show, our second selection will be an encore presentation of Caetano Veloso's 1968 album. One of the first Tropicália efforts, this album is one of the earliest experiments in fusion between  Brazilian popular music and psychedelic rock.

Finally, we will once again play our featured album from show#25, which was the last show of 2012. Being the last show of the year, this selection was picked with some care. It is none other than the second album by the Brazilian musical group Novos Baianos. Acabou Chorare., released in 1972. Adopting the expressive guitar of Jimi Hendrix, the "brasilidade" of Assis Valente, and the strong influence of João Gilberto, who also served as a mentor of the group at the time of recording the album, the group produced an album that shows a great versatility of musical genres. In 2007, in the "The 100 Greatest Albums of Brazilian Music" by Rolling Stone, Acabou Chorare came at the first position, being considered a masterpiece by specialists, producers and journalists called for the pool.Whether you tune in live or download our podcast (heck, why not do both?), this is a show you will not want to miss!

Bem Brasil #29, Featuring Gal Costa. Original Air Date: 01/27/2013

It was the last Sunday of the month and as usual, the show was broadcast entirely in Portuguese.

On today's show, we heard Gal Costa, one of the divas of the Tropicalismo movement. Focusing on her 1969 effort Gal Costa (Não Identificado). 

Equally marked by fuzz guitar freakouts as it is with dreamy bossa nova, this record is one of the jewels in the crown of Tropicalia, as well as pop music in general. As always, her tropicalismo partners are never far away, so we will hear tunes from Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Maria Bethânia and Tom Zé, among others.

On the 12/09/12 installment of Bem Brasil with Will Crawford, we enjoyed  Caetano Veloso's 1968 album, one of the first Tropicália efforts. This album is one of the earliest experiments in fusion between  Brazilian popular music and psychedelic rock.

Bem Brasil #18, Featuring Rita Lee's Debut Album Build Up (1970) Originally Aired 11/11/12

On this  Bem Brasil with Will Crawford, We grooved to the sounds of Mutantes' singer Rita Lee's first album Build Up . This album could be considered another Mutantes album, as Fellow Mutantes members Arnaldo Baptista and Liminha are on the bill, as well as famed Mutantes arranger Rogério Duprat.  

In the first hour, we enjoyed  great songs from Sivuca, Clara Nunes, João Bosco, Skank, Caetano Veloso, Itamar Assumpção, Titãs, Cascabulho,  Celso Blues Boy, Ultraje a Rigor, Boca Livre, Jessé, Raimundo Fagner, Amelinha  and many others . We even issued a warning, as this show's selections featured notorious Brazilian punk band Olho Seco.
