It's Finally Here! BBR #100! Three Albums in Two Hours and More!

Well, here it is, finally, our 100th Show! To celebrate, your host will share with you three - count 'em - THREE of his favorite albums of all time, two of which are extremely rare, straight from Will's record collection!

We'll start with the best known album of the three, the great Tropicália: ou Panis et Circencis, a 1968 collaboration album by artists including Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso,Tom Zé, Os Mutantes and Gal Costa. Considered an important record in the history of Brazilian music, it features arrangements by Rogerio Duprat and lyrical contributions from Torquato Neto. It is considered to be the manifesto of the Tropicalismo movement and is number 2 on Rolling Stone's list of 100 greatest Brazilian albums of all time.

Next, we will hear the long out-of print self-titled debut album of the highly esteemed Grupo Medusa.  Active for only a short period of time in the early 1980's this group is a direct descendant of the legendary Quarteto Novo, not only through its music, which could be considered an evolution of the style, but also through the presence of the great Quarteto Novo member Heraldo do Monte in its lineup!

Our last full album will be the extremely rare Patíbulo, the second LP by Singer/Songwriter/Author Rogério Do Maranhão. Released in 1980 through a small independent label, its awful cover can hardly hint at the beauty of the music contained therein.

Bem Brasil #54: Four albums + Three Decades + Two Hours = One Great Show!

On This Sunday's Bem Brasil Radio, your host will try to outdo himself and break his previous record of three albums in two hours by cramming four full albums in his two-hour time slot! Our cup runneth over!

This week's selections represent some of the cream of Brazilian music with four amazing albums that span three decades. Four (actually, eight) different artists, with four of them hailing  from the great state of Bahia. Coincidence? Don't bet on it!

Our musical romp begins with the album Polemica,From 1956. Originally released as two four-track 8-inch records, it was rearranged and combined into a single LP when the technology finally caught up. These recordings were the product of a friendly three-year long musical competition between the seminal samba songwriter Noel Rosa and the then unknown rising star Wilson Batista. like other musical rivalries in history, this one forced each man to take his craft to new heights. Francisco Egydio sings Rosa's songs, while Batista's songs are interpreted by Roberto Paiva.

From Samba, we will move to Bossa Nova for our second selection, which will be no other than Joao Gilberto's debut album Chega de Saudade from 1959! Often credited as the first Bossa Nova Album, it is considered one of the 100 best Brazilian albums in history by Rolling Stone Magazine!

 For our third selection, we will stay with the good folk from Bahia to hear another auspicious debut, this time from Maria Bethania whose first album could be considered a synthesis of the two albums above.. Released in 1965, in this album we hear some of her brother Caetano Veloso's earliest compositions, as well as songs from Noel Rosa, Carlos Lyra and Dorival Caymmi, (the latter two having songs covered by Gilberto).

Finally, we close the show with seminal rocker Raul Seixas' second album Sociedade da Grã-Ordem Kavernista Apresenta Sessão das 10. (1971)  an avant-garde album featuring Seixas, singer Sergio Sampaio, samba artist Miriam Batucada and Edy Star. The record's mix of Tropicalia, Zappa-era rock and roll and anarchic surrealistic experiments launched Raul Seixas as an icon of Brazilian counterculture.

Bem Brasil #50: Three Albums in Two Hours! (Airs 06/23!)

Wow, 50 shows already? The weeks just flew by! As the show's producer and presenter, I have to say I have enjoyed every minute so far. Unfortunately, this feeling is somewhat diminished by the knowledge that some show files were lost. So, to celebrate this somewhat auspicious occasion (to me, anyway), I've decided to replay three great but very different albums that were featured in earlier shows that were lost, starting with show #17, which featured Di Melo' s one and only album, released in 1975 (Rare and out of print!), which included cameos from Hermeto Pascoal and Heraldo do Monte.

Originally aired on our 22nd show, our second selection will be an encore presentation of Caetano Veloso's 1968 album. One of the first Tropicália efforts, this album is one of the earliest experiments in fusion between  Brazilian popular music and psychedelic rock.

Finally, we will once again play our featured album from show#25, which was the last show of 2012. Being the last show of the year, this selection was picked with some care. It is none other than the second album by the Brazilian musical group Novos Baianos. Acabou Chorare., released in 1972. Adopting the expressive guitar of Jimi Hendrix, the "brasilidade" of Assis Valente, and the strong influence of João Gilberto, who also served as a mentor of the group at the time of recording the album, the group produced an album that shows a great versatility of musical genres. In 2007, in the "The 100 Greatest Albums of Brazilian Music" by Rolling Stone, Acabou Chorare came at the first position, being considered a masterpiece by specialists, producers and journalists called for the pool.Whether you tune in live or download our podcast (heck, why not do both?), this is a show you will not want to miss!
