This week's pick is a bit of a paradox: It contains the highest number of artists ever, and yet it is the shortest video picked to date.
1985 was the year We Are the World came out, and it was a big hit in Brazil. Somebody liked the concept and decided to reproduce it and apply it to the victims of the drought in the northeastern part of Brazil, an area that has long been known for this situation. In fact, it is the theme of the region's most representative song, Asa Branca written by illustrious native son Luiz Gonzaga, who fittingly also participates in the video featured here.
According to Raimundo Fagner's website (http://www.raimundofagner.com.br), Gilberto Gil wrote the music and the lyric was a collaboration between Gil and a few other artists. In the spirit of the occasion, the song was credited as a collective creation. Most artists contributions are vocal, with the exception of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Wagner Tiso, who contributed by playing piano. While the individual singers'' performances were praised, some critics derided the chorus sections, which were not as well arranged as they would have liked. Still, this 155 person recording (full chorus listed below) contains what must be a record number of major Brazilian Artists and is unlikely to ever be beaten.
This week's video was recorded to publicize the album and shows some artists recording the tracks. How many can you identify?
